Hoops for Homes to Change Lives: Whirlpool’s Commitment from the Court to the Community

🏀 Basketball is not just a game- it’s an opportunity for young athletes, a way to build confidence and strengthen their families.

For many young athletes, it is beyond just a game- it’s a path to discipline, confidence and belonging. It is a Place to Dream. But for those kids growing up in tough situations, even getting to the court to practice can be a challenge.

That’s where Hoops for Homes steps in.

In partnership with Whirlpool, is helping kids pursue their dreams both on and off the court. This initiative is not just a sponsorship- it’s a commitment to support young kids’ future, their families and communities.

What is Hoops for Homes?

A new community project led by Derrick Coleman, former NBA Player and philanthropist.

It’s mission:

✔️ Support youth through basketball

✔️ Help families with reach household needs

✔️ Use sports to build stronger, united communities

This is more than a sponsorship- it is a promise to uplift lives.

Why this Partnership Matters?

Many families cannot afford the cost of youth sports – but their kids still deserve to play. This is where Whirlpool supports change.

Not with fancy gears,

Not with fancy jerseys

But with something real: a Washer.

Because sometimes, its the small things that make a big difference.

✅ A Clean jersey = Confidence on the game day

✅ A working washer = less burden for a busy parent

✅ Clean clothes = a child who shows up proud and ready

Whirlpool doesn’t just give appliances- they give time, relief, and dignity.

Whirlpool’s Impact

This initiative is more than a basketball game. Whirlpool is a proud partner to provide real support to families and communities.

Families who live on paycheck to paycheck often struggle with basic needs like laundry. Kids may miss training and practices or school because they don’t have clean clothes.

This simple reward helps families:

✔️ Keep clothes and uniforms clean

✔️ Improve kid’s hygiene and confidence

✔️ Bring comfort and dignity back to home

✔️Reduce time and cost spent on laundromats

It is not just about clean clothes – it’s about helping families feel human again. By giving something practical, Whirlpool is helping families regain time, energy and self-esteem- and help them focus on the future.

Every Story Matters

Behind every young player is a powerful story.

A child with big dreams, hardworking parents and a home that needs support.

Hoops for Homes is about changing lives.

When families get the support they need, kids can focus on what matters- playing, learning and growing.

How to get Involved?

📢Every effort makes a difference. Here’s how you can be the part of change:

Planning:

My goal for this blog post was to create content that is clear, emotional and written in plain language and easy for everyone to understand. I kept the young athletes and their families i.e. our audience “A” many of whom might come from undeserved communities. I focused on connecting emotionally with the audience while using plain and simple words so that everyone can understand. Here I used simple and direct sentences so that the readers of all levels can understand. I used words that everyone can understand and avoided jargon. I made sure to make the content short and concise with short paragraphs and simple sentences. It helps with the readability and keeps the reader engaged, especially on mobile. It has an emotional storytelling to create connection. I wanted people to feel the post while reading which is why i included some real-life touches to build strong connection. It is benefit-focused where it talks about how a washer helps more than just with their laundry. The post has clear CTA’s which speaks to action and not just awareness. (Briscoe, Lecture: Copy Writing VS Content Writing, W25, Slide No:5)

The overall writing tone is also uplifting and community focused which directly aligns with Whirlpool’s brand message and Derrick Coleman’s values. (Briscoe, Lecture: Writing Website Copy & Plain Language Writing, W25, Slide No:7)

b. How it meets our objectives.

The blog post supports the campaign objectives by:

Introducing the initiative and its purpose clearly in the first few lines. Readers will know what “Hoops for Homes” is withing the first few sentences. It is written in inverted pyramid style by giving the most important information first. (Briscoe, Lecture: Writing Website Copy & Plain Language Writing, W25, Slide No:13)

  1. Clearly explain what it is:

It explains the benefits to youths and families through real world examples such as clean clothes for game day to boost confidence. It shows how this campaign helps families. I included some instances of clean clothes providing confidence to kids, and washers helping to save time and money for the family. With the use of such examples, it helps readers understand the actual impact of the program. Briscoe, Lecture: Importance of Visuals, W25, Slide No:14)

  • It shows how whirlpool is helping:

It highlights the role of Whirlpool not only as a sponsor but a genuine helper with dignity and everyday relief. Instead of just saying Whirlpool gave washers, I thoroughly explained how it helps. It turns a simple appliance into a symbol of support. It aligns with writing emotionally and not just factually. It evokes emotions which connects with the readers with the cause. (Briscoe, Lecture: Copy Writing VS Content Writing W25, Slide No:5)

  • It uses plain English writing:

It uses plain writing and active voice to keep it readable. It is easy to read as the sentences are short, and it follows a simple structure which avoides using complex words. (Briscoe, Lecture: Plain Language Writing, W25, Slide No:18)

  • It fits the campaign tone.

It also uses a warm and caring tone to provide a feeling of supportive withoit being too professional or cold. It matches the voice of community-based initiatives. (Briscoe, Lecture: Writing Website Copy & Plain Language Writing, W25, Slide No:2)

  • It creates emotional connection:

The words like “ a home that needs support” or every story matter” etc. Build empathy and it makes the campaign feel personal and also relatable to the audiences.

c. Your calls to action and justifications.

The blog post has some CTA’s like share stories on social media, attend event and follow on social media. I used these as CTA as:

The CTA, “Share stories and post on social media” increases visibility through the user engagement. Based on what we discussed in class, earned media such as uses sharing has stronger emotional trust. Also, social sharing gives voice to real stories and builds a bigger community impact. (Briscoe, Lecture: Copy writing vs Content writing, W25, Slide No:7)

“Join upcoming events and show your support” It encourages offline participation like attending community events and games. It gets into the idea of experimental marketing where people connect deeper. (Briscoe, Lecture:  Plain Language Writing Tips, W25, Slide No:3)

“Follow updates, donate or connect in your local community” It provides the viewers with multiple options to engage based on what people are comfortable with doing. Like donation is a direct impact, following is awareness and involvement is long tern engagement. It reflects audience segmentation strategies by offering actions based on the user’s level of commitment.(Briscoe, Lecture: Copy writing vs Content writing, W25, Slide No:6)

d. Please provide in-depth justifications as they relate to elements discussed in class.

I used various concepts and strategies discussed in class. Some of the class learning I used in this blog is mentioned below:

  1. Emotional marketing and storytelling:

The blog uses real life challenges such as dirty jerseys, broken washers, tired mom to evoke emotions.

  • Plain Language Writing:

The blog avoids jargon and uses simple phrases. It uses plain writing to help the readers feel the message instead of just reading it.

  • Authenticity of Brand:

Whirlpool is shown not just as a donor but as a genuine helper. It provides a concept of brand authenticity where honest efforts matter more than just flashy promises.

  • Strategy alignment- Fpattern:

The layout of the blog follows F-pattern structure which is top, catchy headline and story, middle, message of the brand and its impact and end, call to action.

It aligns with the digital reading habits which keep the attention and engagement.

Therefore, while creating the blog post, I tried to make the story telling as real and raw. It raises awareness about real issues kids’ and their families faces. It uses a warm and community focused tone which reflects the values of whirlpool. The content is made easy to read, follow along and is actionable.
